Overview: Life expectancy in Detroit is lower than surrounding areas, and disparities by race/ethnicity persist.

Positively influencing social determinants of health is necessary for improving outcomes and reducing the impact of health on economic equity. Beyond improving the social determinants of health, there must be access to quality, affordable health care. This extends beyond just the availability of health insurance. Residents must be able to afford the cost of, and physically access, medical care. Depending on the type of health insurance plan, out-of-pocket costs can be considerable, and impair the ability of low-income Detroiters to access quality care.
